This Lullaby by Sarah Dessen is about Remy, a teenage girl struggling with the idea of true love. The story takes place the summer before Remy leaves to go to college on the other side of the country. When the story starts Remy is planing her mother, Barbara Starr's fifth wedding. She is engaged to Don the owner of the local car dealership. It is at this car dealership when Dexter, a happy-go-lucky musician, literally crashes into Remy telling her that he just knows they are meant to be together. Throughout the book Remy relies on her best friends, Lissa, Jess, and Chloe. They have been friends forever and all have similar dating habits with a revolving door of boyfriends. Dexter changes all this for Remy. They meet again at the wedding when she finds out he's part of the band Don hired. They begin dating after that night and everything changes. The girl who once had such tight rules about love lets her rules start to slide. All along she struggles with one question. Does true love exist? Remy's brother Chris is currently dating a girl named Jennifer Anne, but she is so sophisticated and Chris is definitely not. Remy continues to reject love even rejecting that she loves Dexter. After all those failed marriages including her father, how could love possibly exist? The only thing her father left for her is the pesky one hit wonder, "This Lullaby". She has her ups and downs contemplating love. Throughout the course of the novel she falls in love, rejects her love, breaks up with Dexter and comes full circle in the end. Between her mother and Don who once again fail, and Chris and Jennifer Anne who become engaged, Remy realizes love might not always be permanent but you should enjoy it while it lasts.

Lock and Key by Sarah Dessen, is a story about Ruby who is abandoned by her mother, The story begins with Ruby moving in with her sister Cora who Ruby has not seen since she was eight. Cora has to take in Ruby after child services finds out she was a minor living alone. Ruby resents having to move in with Cora and her husband Jaime. Ruby feels like a burden and tries to run away. There she meets Nate, the boy next door. Ruby does not get to run away and has to stay with Cora and Jamie. Along the way she flashes back to details of life in the Yellow house with her mother, and falls in love with Nate. She starts a job at a jewelry kiosk in the mall, there she meets Harriet. Harriet is very independent and high strung, much like Ruby. When working at the kiosk the key necklace Ruby always wears, with the key to the yellow house, becomes very popular. As the story progresses Ruby helps save Harriet's business and she finds out Nate is being abused by his father. She helps Nate work up the courage to go live with his mother. Ruby also discovers that while she thought Cora didn't want to keep in touch after she moved away, Cora actually tried her best to save Ruby and get her out of their mother's care but she couldn't due to the constantly changing phone numbers and addresses. After this epiphany Ruby realized life with Jamie and Cora isn't that bad and she learns the true meaning of family. Family isn't always about the people you are blood related to but in reality family is all the people who care about you.
